A new home is quiet at first. The rooms echo, the shelves are bare, and the kettle is still in a box somewhere. The best housewarming gift does not fill a shelf. It becomes part of the first days: the first tea, the first dinner with friends, the first evening when the place starts to feel like home.
When we choose a gift for a new home, we think of four simple things.
Something for light. Candles are the oldest way to say “welcome”. A set of tall candles or a lantern by the door changes a room in a minute, and it gets used the very same night.
Something for the table. A new home soon has guests. A pair of mugs, a teapot, or a set of four glasses will be on the table within the week. Choose pieces that mix easily with what the family already owns: sand, cream, grey, clear glass.
Something for flowers. Guests bring flowers to a new home, and there is never a vase. Bring the vase. It is the one gift nobody thinks of and everybody needs.
Something soft. A thick bath towel in a calm colour is a small daily comfort. It is a good choice when you do not know the style of the home, because comfort has no style.
A few gentle rules. Choose something that will be used, not stored. Stay with quiet colours unless you know their taste well. And write a note by hand, or let us write your words on a card for you. Years later, people keep the note.
If the gift travels straight from us to their door, we wrap it by hand and leave the prices out of the parcel. Only your words arrive with it.
